Comments on the Conference Championship Games

Here is how the NFL Playoff tree is looking like before this weekend’s games. I am not calling this article “predictions” because there’s no room to predict anything with the Patriots: they win. They win a lot. They win always. And they win even more when is playoffs, cold and when they face Andy Reid’s team deep in the playoffs.

With the New Orleans Saints there is no room for predictions either. They are my team, and I am too scared of the high stakes, the Rams, and the red moon.

Predictions Divisional Round: Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs

The Divisional Round weekend starts strong with a matchup that epitomises what the NFL playoffs truly are about; the Kansas City Chiefs who have completed a very successful regular season under Andy Reid’s renown strong starts (5-0), and the Colts. The Colts being the red hot team that makes it into the playoffs against expectations and now is a fearful foe to confront in January football.

If this wasn’t attractive enough as storyline there are more to talk once we scratch slightly the surface.

Divisional Round predictions & Wild Card round aftermaths.

Despite the general content surrounding the Wild Card round, I felt more disappointment throughout the games than satisfaction. On Saturday the Colts vs Texans game, lacked competition, and Sunday the Chargers vs Ravens wasn’t much of a game when it comes to excitement and equality until the end. Truth to be said, all games where tactically very rich and attractive to watch, but I was showing games to a novice and those were not the best ones for a newcomer to watch. Hopefully the Divisional Round will be loaded with excitement and close scores.

Reactions to the Eagles at Bears game

I did not have the time nor the clarity to get anything written about this game beforehand. My instinct was screaming beware the Eagles, once in January they turn into a monster. But at the same time, I also saw the general applause the Bears were collecting, let alone what their great defense could do to Foles’ broken rib.

So I started watching the game with the feeling of “let’s see what happens” as I had confusing expectations of this game.

During the first half we saw a very capable Eagles team that was actually wasting the opportunity to translate their very mild edge over the game on the scoreboard. On the Bears side we saw a struggling offense (more consequence of a great Eagles defense than anything else) and a defense that adjusted from the initial Eagle drive and shut down the visitor team for the remainder of the 1st half. Foles was battling the suffocating Bears pressure in a correct and safe way, for the most part. But that endzone pick was a silly mistake that could have cost a lot to the Eagles, as just 3 points seemed a whole lot in this game.

Despite the heart-breaking defeat I liked the Bears. Trubiski answered with the best of his game during the second half, after very quiet two initial quarters. Had the Bears faced any of the other two NFC wild card teams, they’d be walking into the Divisional Round by now, but the Eagles were a poisoned cup of wine. If I were the Bears I would not make such a big drama of this loss, and just would keep working and reinforcing the team during the off-season. They need to keep Vic Fangio leading that extraordinary defense, that is Nagy’s biggest responsibility over the summer. Besides that, maybe some more offensive gun powder would be welcome, but as weeks will pass Bears fan, players and managers will feel better about themselves. Even about their kicker, for whom the camera angle where we can see how the kick was tipped will be extremely relieving !

Wild Card round predictions 3

Los Angeles Chargers at Baltimore Ravens

This is probably the most interesting Wild Card round “affiche” in the game lineup for this weekend.

The Ravens are a team that has reached the post-season with the appreciation and admiration of the NFL analysts and old-school gurus, because they run the football and have a strong defense. Good for them, because what I see is an unbalanced team, that relies only in one sort of gameplay leaving no room for reaction if the game turns out to be fast paced and high scoring.

The Ravens have taken the spot of a team that would have stood a real chance to make a deep run into the playoffs and even the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for us, spectators of the AFC, the Chargers will be facing them, and not the Steelers. Even worse, should they meet the Patriots in case they pass today, that game would me millions of times less interesting than a Steelers vs Patriots would have been. This is why I consider the Ravens the legitimate playoff team of this season. – There is one every year, and I still hold terrible memories of those 7-9 Seahawks-

Now, if I am so critical to the Ravens, why I give them good chances of making it today? Well, in the first place because they play at home, but mostly because they face the Chargers.

The Chargers are a franchise with the upmost capacity to beat themselves. This fact alone is how I see the Ravens standing a chance tonight. Any other scenario presents a landscape where I see Los Angeles making it to the Divisional Round.

I see LA moving the chains, keeping Baltimore’s defense on the field and controlling the tempo of the game. I see the Ravens offense struggling to do the same and more important, I see the Chargers with the capacity to make a scoring run to overcome a deficit whereas I don’t see the Ravens doing the same.

So, my prediction is; normal case scenario, the Chargers lead the game towards an offensive pace that the Ravens can’t keep up with. And win the game showing the superiority of their talent on both sides of the ball. However, I am quite certain that for the Chargers to win, it will take something messy, ugly and plenty of mistakes, turnovers, crazy scoring drives and agonic finish.

See what the NFL bring us tonight.
